Before malls, there was the Avenue of Fashion. Livernois Avenue from McNichols (6 Mile Road) to 8 Mile has long been home to retail establishments, anchored by a tradition of hard-working small business owners. From the second-generation-Black-woman-owned Jo's Gallery to former NFL player Ron Bartell's Kuzzo's Chicken and Waffles to Baker's Keyboard Lounge, the oldest jazz club in the country, Livernois Avenue proves that Main Street communities can thrive.
McNichols Road near Livernois is also home to the University of Detroit Mercy and University of Detroit High School, as well as to the Marygrove Conservancy, which was formed after the closure of Marygrove College. The nonprofit manages the 53-acre campus and is working to create a "cradle to career" educational campus from early childhood to college and career training.
